✨“Reception centre as a place of childhoods: Everyday lives of under school aged asylum seeker children in Finland”. ✨ As she says about her work: “It is important to produce knowledge with under-school-aged children living in reception centres. Some of them have lived all of their first years in these centres and that's the normal place of childhood for them. If you want to find out about what the board does and what being a board member means in practice, contact ETMU chair Saara for more information (saara.pellander@migrationinstitute.fi).
If you want to apply for being a board member, send a message including a short introduction of yourself to our secretary Linda Bäckman Linda.I.Backman@abo.fi by November 30. There is a maximum of 7 places for new board members to fill this year. The board meets about 8 times a year, most of these meetings are held remotely these days. Being on the ETMU board means being part of a wonderful community of fellow researchers and working together to promote issues that you and the ETMU community find important – it is both fun and rewarding!
❗️ETMU AWARD 2020 – MAKE A SUGGESTION BY DECEMBER 1
The board of ETMU invites proposals for candidates for the 2020 ETMU Award. The deadline for the proposals is December 1, 2020. The board of ETMU will make
the decision based on the proposals. The recipient of the award will be
announced at the upcoming ETMU and NMR conference that will be held online in January 2021.
The ETMU Award is given annually to a person who has promoted ethnic relations
and cultural diversity in Finland and/or internationally. This person may be a researcher or a person with other merits in the field. Last year, ETMU awarded Elina Pirjatanniemi recognizing
not only her work, but the important contributions of the community of legal scholars in the fields of ethnic relations and international migration in Finland. Elina Pirjatanniemi’s example reminds us that as academics, we can and should speak out about injustices we encounter. It shows us that in times of polarization and heated debates over questions as politicized as asylum seeking
and migration, voices that remind us of fundamental human rights principles can and need to be heard. The recipients of the previous awards can be found here.

☀️Good morning ☀️ and welcome to our first edition of #whatwestudy! We are kicking things off with the work of a group around Reetta Toivanen entitled ➡️ Migration and the narratives of Europe as an area of freedom, security and justice ⬅️ The project is part of the Center of Excellence EuroStorie. In Reetta’s words “the project is very exciting since we get to study how exile has impacted Europe from the first world war until today. The emphasis of the project is to investigate what are the knowledges that refugees bring with them and how these change what we call Europe. It is a big plus to have great colleagues to work with, we are almost 30 persons in Helsinki.”
