The Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) and The Association for Gender Studies in Finland (SUNS), 25-26 November 2016, University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu Campus
The Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) and The Association for Gender Studies in Finland (SUNS) are pleased to announce their joint conference: Gendered Mobilities. The conference’s goal is to reflect on the meanings of gender and sexuality in varied contexts of mobility, as well as the ways in which mobility in turn affects our understandings of gender and sexuality.
The transnational movement of people, ideas, objects and capital are profoundly gendered and sexualised processes. In addition to gender and sexuality, mobility processes intersect with such social and cultural markers of difference as ethnicity, race, class, nationality, religion, age, family position, and (dis)ability. Endeavours to understand – and to control – mobility in our everyday lives, politics and even in research, often tend towards oversimplification, ignoring the intersectional character of mobility. This conference invites scholars from the two different multidisciplinary fields to challenge oversimplified explanations of mobility as well as to analyse the social corollaries that such oversimplifications may have.
The conference keynote speakers will be Dr Yasmine Gunaratnam (Goldsmiths, University of London), Professor Sarah Green (University of Helsinki), and Dr Anitta Kynsilehto (University of Tampere).
