The Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) announces a call for travel grant applications, funded by the Annika Forsander Memorial Fund, to support the participation of PhD researchers in international research conferences. The applicants must be members of ETMU, and their research topic must be related to the field that ETMU represents, i.e. the study of ethnic relations and international migration.

The deadline for applications is September 30, 2018. The applicants will be notified about the result of their application by October 20, 2018. The awarded grants must be used between November 1, 2018-October 31, 2019.

ETMU will award 1-2 travel grants, depending on the size of the awards. A single grant cannot exceed 1000 euros.

Terms of application:

In the grant decisions, priority will be given to early-stage PhD researchers who do not have any other travel funding at their disposal. The applicant must be a member of ETMU by the end of the application period (September 30, 2018) (information on how to join ETMU). Each applicant can submit only one application in the application round. The applicant must be a PhD student at a university in Finland. The members of the ETMU board cannot apply for travel grants.

Grants are intended for mandatory conference expenses, such as registration fees and reasonable travel and accommodation expenses. Grants do not cover, for example, daily allowances or insurance costs.

Grants support conference participation outside Finland. Conference participation refers to presenting a paper or participating on a poster session. The application can be submitted before the presentation or poster is accepted in the conference program, but the grant recipient must submit a proof of the acceptance as soon as possible to ETMU (e.g. a link to the confirmed conference program or a pdf copy of the conference program/abstract book as an email attachment). If the applicant’s paper/poster proposal is rejected, the funding will be canceled.

The successful candidates commit to submitting a brief written report of the conference trip to ETMU within two months after the conference, along with original receipts of the conference expenses. If the final expenses are smaller than what was granted, the recipient returns the unused funds to ETMU.

Grants are not awarded retrospectively to conference travel occurring before the application period ends. The grant can be used only for the purpose that it was awarded for.

The board of ETMU will make the decision on grant recipients. The names of the recipients will be published on the website of ETMU and at the annual ETMU Conference in Turku on November 15-16, 2018.

Application guidelines:

Candidates are invited to submit a short CV (max. 2 pages) and a free-form application, which explains the travel plan, the budget, and the significance of the conference to the applicant’s research and career.

Please make sure that the application includes the following information:

  • Applicant’s name and contact information

  • Title/position

  • Other possible funding sources

  • Travel destination and time

  • Purpose of travel

  • Detailed cost estimate of travel expenses

  • Plan of how the funds will be used, and a justification of why the trip is significant for the applicant

  • Explanation of how the applicant’s research topic is related to ETMU’s research field

The applicant can also attach a proof of the paper/poster proposal’s acceptance in the conference program, if that is already available.

Please submit the application as a single pdf attachment to the secretary of the ETMU board Minna Seikkula (minna.seikkula(at)helsinki.fi) by the deadline. Please title your email “Travel grant/Annika Forsander Memorial Fund”. Late applications will not be considered.
