I am Leonardo Custódio. I am an Afro-Brazilian post-doctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR) at Tampere University. In my work I am interested in the role of communication in struggles for rights and social change. Based on my PhD work, I published the book “Favela Media Activism: Counterpublics for Human Rights in Brazil” (Lexington Books).
Since 2017, I have focused on anti-racism media activism among people who suffer from racism in Finland and Brazil. As an activist researcher, I have co-coordinated the Anti-Racism Media Activism Alliance (Kone Foundation, 2018–2020) and the Activist Research Network – a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary initiative to promote dialogue among researchers engaged in politically motivated research.
This is my first on the ETMU Board. In my free time, I love running, hiking, and traveling (preferably at the same time).
