CALL FOR BLOG PIECES: REIMAGINING THE ETMU BLOG

In an effort to draw forward ETMU’s focus on the relationship between research and social action, we are introducing new blog guidelines and an open call for submissions. Through this platform, we are interested in centering the relationship between research and policy, emphasizing nuanced inquiry into the global implications and ethics of migration research, and exploring the role of scholars and researchers in the geopolitical landscape. This publication embraces a politics of belonging and an ethic of care, interdependence, and collaborative agency across the complex landscape of migration research. We invite submissions from anyone working across contexts where scholarship and activism might meaningfully inform each other.

Submissions may include (but are not limited to):

Research Spotlights

  • Author summaries of recent publications, with a focus on implications of findings relevant to public work and social innovation in areas related to migration justice
  • Pieces featuring the work of research collectives, funded projects, experimental courses, community collaborations, and other research-driven events in areas related to migration justice

Reflective pieces on the role of the researcher as a social actor, e.g.:

  • Reflections on researcher responsibility and capacity with respect to global issues in migration or current events that impact migration patterns
  • Issues in research ethics with respect to minoritized populations in a rapidly changing academic landscape and polarizing geopolitical context
  • Reflections on academic life by researchers who identify as migrants in their research placements and locations

Curated reading/media lists and other arts-based engagements:

  • Annotated reference lists that feature articles, books, literature, poetry, music, podcasts, news articles, etc., organized around a particular theme connected to issues of migration justice
  • Original artwork, poetry, audio/video contributions, or other mixed-media works that are publishable in blog form and related to issues of migration justice

Guidelines

Word count:

While there is no set word limit for submissions, we recommend that pieces aim for between 500-2000 words.

Style Guide:

Please follow APA7 style and citation conventions.

Language:

Submissions may be in any language. If other than Finnish or English, please include a paragraph abstract in English or Finnish. (Please note, the editing process may take longer.)

Ethics:

We accept pieces that are unapologetically antiracist, respectful of complexity, and attuned to the agency, interconnectedness, and interdependence of all people as we navigate unprecedented planetary crises that don’t stop at national borders.

Publication Timeline:

As the editing work is a volunteer activity, we don’t have a set timeline for responses to contributions and publication trajectories. However, whenever possible, we aim to offer initial responses within two weeks of submission, and to publish on a timeline in which contributions remain current.

The author retains all rights to the published content. We ask that you not duplicate submissions in other online locations, as it negatively impacts Search Engine Optimization (SEO). We also ask that any use of AI is clearly indicated in the submission. Authors may request to withdraw previously published posts from the ETMU Blog at any time.
