My name is Mari Toivanen and I work as an Academy Research Fellow at the Swedish School of Social Science, University of Helsinki. I hold a Master’s degree in Humanities from Paris IV Sorbonne (2008) and a PhD degree in Sociology from the University of Turku (2014).
My doctoral research focused on the negotiations of belonging among youth with Kurdish background in Finland, and my postdoctoral work on Kurdish diaspora communities’ transnational participation towards Kurdistan. I’m currently working on digital nomadism, that is location-independent work.
I have been in ETMU’s Board for some years now, and currently also a member of the LYR’s editorial team and the Academic Activities team. In my free time, I enjoy sports, cooking, travelling and spending time with friends and family.
